Positive Self Affirmations

Positive self affirmations are an important tool for countering unhealthy and inaccurate beliefs that lead to low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, and other forms of distress. Repeatedly writing out or voicing aloud positive self affirmations can eventually lead to the development of a more positive self-view. Changing unhelpful beliefs about yourself will lead to a decrease in the negative self-talk that underlies a significant amount of distress.

After referring to the examples of affirmations below, try to develop your own affirmations. Effective affirmations tend to be short and simple statements. It is important to construct affirmations that you belief at least a little bit, or that you want to believe, as this will facilitate progress strengthening your belief in your affirmations over time.

Examples of Affirmations:

  • I deserve to be happy.

  • I am a valuable person.

  • I am learning how to better manage my anxiety.

  • I believe in myself.

  • I am learning to face my fears.

  • I love and accept myself the way I am.

  • I am a strong, confident person.
